SAT Reasoning Test
When people talk about the SAT, they usually mean the SAT Reasoning Test (formerly known as the SAT-I), the most commonly taken college entrance exam in the United States. Over 2 million students take it each year. The SAT is a three and half hour test of reading, writing, and mathematical abilities. Most questions are multiple-choice. A separate score is reported on a scale of 200-800 for each of these three components.
The SAT is administered by the College Board. It is given seven times a year, in January, March or April (in alternate years), May, June, October, November, and December. Many students take the test in the spring of their junior year and/or the fall of their senior year of high school.
Registration deadlines tend to fall about five weeks before each test date. You can register to take it on line, but the College Board site is usually very busy right before a registration deadline, so it's best not to wait until the last minute. To register by mail, fill out the form in the College Board's Registration Bulletin for the SAT Program. You can get a copy of this free publication through your school or guidance counselor. You can also call (609) 771-7600 to have a copy mailed to you. The TTY number for this free service is (609) 882-4118 or (800) 728-7267.
